Bugs Be Gone: Lab Report
Question: How do flies affect dogs? How can we create a bug repellent that is safe for dogs and can be used for day to day use?
Hypothesis: Our hypothesis is that we will find ingredients that will repel flies and other insects but still suit a dog. Then we hope to create a combination of these ingredients that are safe for the dog to use, is comfortable and ideal for day to day life.

Materials:
- 30mL Eucalyptus Oil
- 30mL Tea Tree Oil
- 30mL Lavender Oil
- 30mL Rosemary Oil
- 30mL Peppermint Oil
- 1 Spray Bottle
- 1 teaspoon
- 1 funnel
- 1 beaker
- 100mL Glycerin
- 100mL Witch Hazel
- 1 stick/spoon
- a pair of gloves-optional
Safety:
- Be careful not to ingest the different oils as some can be poisonous.
- Make sure to wash all items after use or else oils can harden on the objects and then it becomes very hard to wash off.
- Don’t breathe the oils in, inhaling them can lead to health problems.
- When using the bug repellent make sure to always shake before using, to make sure all the oils are mixed together properly in order to use the repellent properly.
Procedure:
- Gather the 5 bottles of essential oils going to be used: Rosemary, Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint and Eucalyptus.
- Put on a pair of gloves (optional).
- Then select the beaker, teaspoon and spoon for measuring and mixing oil.
- Carefully and steadily, open the bottle of Eucalyptus Oil and measure two teaspoons out using the teaspoon. Accomplish this by measuring each teaspoon at time and pouring one teaspoon at a time.
- After, carefully measure two teaspoons of Witch Hazel using the same method as above in Step 4.
- Next, stir the witch hazel and eucalyptus oil together for a few seconds.
- Then select the bottle and funnel.
- Calmly, unscrew the cap off the spray bottle by turning the cap counter clockwise.
- Carefully place the funnel on top of the open spray bottle. Depending on the size of the spray bottle and funnel you may need to hold the funnel in place.
- Once the funnel is placed on the spray bottle, carefully pour the witch hazel and eucalyptus mixture through the funnel and into the spray bottle.
- Repeat steps 4-7 and 10 for the rest of the oils.
- Once all the oil mixtures are placed into the spray bottle. Gently mix all the oils together with the spoon/stick so that they are evenly mixed. If the spoon/stick does not fit inside use the springy tube on the cap of the bottle. Be aware that all of the witch hazel and natural oil mixtures should already be well blended toge
- Then, select the glycerin and the teaspoon.
- Then measure out a teaspoon of glycerin using the teaspoon.
- Using the funnel as in Step 9, gently pour the glycerin down and into the bottle.
- Gently stir, the concoction once again to make sure that all the oils are well blended together.
- Remove the funnel from the spray bottle.
- Finally, screw the cap back on to the springy bottle turning the cap clockwise.
- When using the bug repellent, shake the bottle until the liquid is well blended, white in color and foamy
Cleanup:
- Seal all oils up, by twisting the caps back on very tightly going clockwise.
- Place all the oils in a safe, cool place where children will not be able to reach. Make sure to read the labels on any other requirements for storage. We suggest storing the oils in a 15 - 30 degree room.
- Wash all utensils that have made contact with the oils: e.g. funnel, beaker, teaspoon and stick/spoon with lots of soap to make sure none of the oils remain on the them.
- Wipe all areas that have made contact with the oil with a wet soapy cloth, then dry.
- Wash hands thoroughly and wipe dry.
