Conclusion
Our bug repellent did work to a certain extent. We were very successful in creating a bug repellent with all the different oils that we chose after all the research. At first, the biggest problem was that we didn’t really know much about all the different oils. It was really hard to start the process of making a repellent because we didn’t know what to put in, we didn’t know what chemicals are safe for dogs but repel bugs at the same time. However, once we started doing Google Searches and then going to actual websites about the oils, and what isn’t safe for dogs we figured out what we needed to do to get on track to making the repellent.
After we figured out how to research our topic, our next problem was money issues. We didn’t really think that the oils, liquids etc that we were going to put in the bug repellent were going to be expensive. Basically, we didn’t think much about the pricing of our bug repellent, we mostly thought about what is going to make this product a good product. Once we realized that these oils and other components were going to be pricey we started cutting down on the oils that we were going to buy and use in the repellent. I think that affected a lot of how our bug repellent is right now because we ended up not using a lot of the oils we were going to use.
As soon as we, received the oils we were pretty much ready to go to make our repellent. The next issue we had was how much of each oil to put in the repellent. We had consulted a lot of home websites that show you how to make repellents for humans not so much dogs. There was also the addition of information that when you use natural oils you need to diffuse them with a carrier oil to make it more safe. We also realized that for each type of oil you need to diffuse it with a certain amount of the carrier oil. So we had all the oils but had a problem with the quantity of it. It took a lot of trial and error to finally figure out what we did wrong and what we needed to fix to make the repellent the best we could make it. The first time we realized that we should have put more of the natural oils and witch hazel because the amount was too small. There were also different methods that we used such as mixing the natural oils before diffusing and then diffusing each oil separately before mixing them together.
Overall, making this bug repellent was a strenuous task at the beginning but as we continued working on it we started to have more of a handle on what we were doing and what needed to be included in the bug repellent. In the beginning we were lost and confused but once we started we slowly started to understand what was going on and what we needed to do. Although we did have some problems as we were working on the making of the bug repellent we still ended up with a product that we are very proud of. The product was not what we intended as there was a separation of sorts between all the oils that we could not seem to figure out. One wish that we would have is to see if the repellent actually worked. When we were making the repellent it was still cold outside and there were no mosquitoes or flies outside. So our next steps to make this product successful would be to test the product out to see if it works and if dogs don’t get affected by it.
